Don't forget about the sunset itself as you watch the performers, munch on vendor food and browse the local artists selling their work. It's a beautiful display as golden, tangerine, fuschia and deep red colors spread across the sky and the big red sun sinks to the horizon. As the sun sinks, its refection in the water moves with it, and the combination of water reflections, sky displays, passing shcooners offering their silhouettes and the sun itself make the best show of the evening. Everyone turns out for it, and there's a feeling of communal good spirits and fun celebration, a great way to kick off your night on Duval Street or elsewhere in Key West. One Human Family is Key West's motto, and even visitors to this tropical city can feel the vibe at Mallory Square.
Get to the Key West Sunset Celebration a little early if you want some of the choice spots right on the water's edge, sitting right on the concrete wall over the water. Get some ice cream, some conch fritters, or some key lime pie on a stick and have a seat along the wall. Watch the water for tarpon as the night gets darker, for they often feed in the waters below Mallory Square. Or watch the fishing boats come in after a full day of fishing the coral reef or beyond.
Afterwards, it's a mass exodus as the good mood continues and pours onto the streets of Old Town Key West. Everyone is HUNGRY! Head further up the street for restaurants that won't be so packed. Or, if you ate early, now's the time to see what Key West nightlife is all about. Like bars? Well you've come to the right place. Duval Street is dotted with saloons, always has been, always will be! If drinking isn't your cup of tea, do some window shopping. Store windows wont' be quite as beautiful as the sunset, but they do their best to offer some unique items.
