Curry Mansion - Don't miss your chance to browse through one of the lovely Victorian mansions Key West is famous for. Curry Mansion is an Inn, a museum and a private residence all within a beautiful tree-filled compound in Key West's Old Town. You can stay at the Inn or just admire it from the outside. It's a show piece and listed on lots of historic inn registries and has won awards for great Inns, etc. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. They claim that Key Lime Pie was first created in the Curry Mansion kitchen by someone called Aunt Sally. This is a real slice of Key West history!
The mansion was built in the mid 1800s, the heyday of Key West elegance and wealth. William Curry was from the Bahamas and made his fortune in Key West as a salvager, one who profits from shipwrecks by selling the bounty they can save from the ocean. William Curry was Key West's first millionaire, as a matter of fact. The house wasn't even completed until thirty years later. The architectural style incorporated themes from all over the Western hemisphere, indicative of its well-traveled builder. There are elements of Victorian style, very popular at the time, Souther style, with the wide porches, and New England coastal style, with widows walks for gazing out to sea. The whole house is elegant and fancy. There are Tiffany window sliding glass doors, formal parlors, elegant dining room, chandeliers, and a mid-1800s piano. Staying at the inn is quite a treat, as you can imagine! There are 28 rooms, each one unique and elegant.
