Marquesas Keys - The Marquesas Keys are a little over twenty miles from Key West, to the West. Situated in a circular pattern, there are about ten island making up the Marquesas, inside of which are some flats (shallow water) superb for fishing. The geologic makeup of the Marquesas is unusual for the Atlantic Ocean: they are an atoll. An atoll is an ancient mountain that's now under water. Nobody is really sure what formed the mountain, whose tips are now the Marquesa Keys. It could have been a volcano or a meteor. Whatever the origins, it is definitely a beautiful spot for a day trip from Key West.
The Marquesas are now officially a National Wilderness Area. There are coral spurs in 5 to 35 feet of water so bring your snorkel gear if you head out to these islands. There are lots and lots of wild birds here so bird-viewers will appreciate the beauty of the Marquesas, too. It's a bird sanctuary here, and Eco tours out of Key West are always bringing passengers out to see the Marquesas. Kayaking is another sport that's perfect for the Marquesas because most of the area inside the circle of islands is so shallow most boats cannot go there. Bring your kayak, your binoculars, lots of water, and a hat and you've got the whole day to explore the beautiful Marquesas!
