If you want to camp in or near Key West, you have a few options. If you are camping with a tent and you want a real camping experience, i.e. in nature, then probably your best bet is to stay at the KOA on Sugarloaf Key. It's twenty miles outside of Key West, but it's got more remote tent spots and you won't feel crowded.
On the other hand, if you just want to save money by camping in a tent and you want to be as close to Key West as possible, then head for Boyd's Key West Campground on Stock Island. It's just a short bus ride away from Old Town, or about three miles from the heart of things in Key West. The city bus stops there and they've got all the modern campground conveniences like a pool etc.
Geiger Key Marina is just 10 miles from Key West and is mainly for RVs. It's a great setup because you can dock your boat right next to your slip.
Bluewater Key RV Resort offers full service RV Key West camping, and rentals as well.
