Want to try Key West snorkeling? It's as easy as choosing a charter boat and showing up at the dock for an exciting day of Key West snorkeling. Bring sunscreen and a towel and you're ready to go. The Mate will instruct you on snorkeling basics on the way out to the reef. The Captain will provide all the gear you need...snorkel, mask, life jacket and fins. They'll tether the boat to a bouy that's right on the edge of the coral reef so once you jump in there's not far to swim. No special skills needed. It's so easy to float in the warm salt ocean water. Just paddle along on the surface and look down to the aquatic world below. Swim to the super shallow areas of the reef and you can see up close the intricate patterns and tiny sea life that inhabits the reef system. All this without diving down!
Where Do We Go Snorkeling in Key West?Sand Key LighthouseThe best spot for Key West snorkeling is Sand Key Lighthouse. This old lighthouse is located on the coral reef and just about six miles from Key West - not far at all! There's an amazing array of marine life on the coral out at Sand Key. Watch for the stars of the reef: Parrotfish. These colorful fish with strong teeth like to chomp on the coral, and what they "produce" becomes sand on the shores of Key West FL! Parrotfish come in an beautiful assortment of colors like royal blue, orange and brown, or pink. They can get quite large, too. Sometimes people mistake them for Grouper at first.
Eastern Dry RocksEastern Dry Rocks is east of Sand Key Lighthouse on the reef. Like Sand Key, it's Sanctuary Preservation Area which means no fishing or spearfising. It's for divers and snorkeling only. No taking fish. Of course there's no standing on the coral or breaking it off or anything that would harm the coral. Your snorkel leader will remind you about these rules on the way out to to reef on the boat. Eastern Dry Rocks is good because the reef is so close to the surface of the water that at low tide it actually sticks out of the water! Even when visibility is bad, you'll see everything at Eastern Dry Rocks because you'll be so close to the coral. Rock KeyRock Key is another Sanctuary Preservation Area that's located between Eastern Dry Rocks and Sand Key. It's also got bouys for tying up your boat. These are great because you're not supposed to anchor on the coral, and also because it's so much easier to tie up to a bouy than to mess with an anchor if you don't have to.
